How do young people develop key decision-making skills, find out about safe and risky behaviour and learn to make wise choices in their lives? Certainly not simply by listening to parents, teachers, social workers and other authority figures. Social learning comes through a wide range of media extending to TV, magazines, discussion with peers and other youth culture outlets.
Problematic aims to take one such channel, the radio phone in problem show, and adapt it to help young people think through problems they may themselves experience. Players take the part of studio panelists who give advice to callers. The aim of the game is for players to give good advice, thereby considering for themselves the best way to deal with a given problem or dilemma. Problematic material is intended to be frank and relevant and makes reference to topics which include:
• Drugs and alcohol
• Sexual behaviour
• Offending
• Family problems
? Child protection situations. Each of the 60 problems comes with three options by way of advice on how to handle it, each with a consequence some of which, of course, are better than others.
